The Covid-19 pandemic crisis that we find ourselves in has brought the unscrupulous nature of Cybercrimals to the fore once again. Whilst the majority of folk around the world are working together for the good of all, certain criminals have seized upon the opportunity to cause more mayhem. Scam emails that prey upon our biggest fears have been publicised by many reputable organisations such as the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre. 

Hoax emails are being sent with links that will either infect the recipient’s computer with Malware or trick them into giving away sensitive information.  

Known as Phishing, subject matter of the fraudulent emails takes many forms and is constantly evolving as the Covid-19 crisis changes. One example offers tax rebates. Whilst these emails are nothing new, they’re now much more poignant as many self-employed people seek to claim Government assistance – hackers are counting on recipients being keen to find out as much information as quickly as possible, as they seek to solve cashflow problems. 

Other emails offer fictitious healthcare cures for Corona Virus, some provide fake news about the evolution of the virus, while others seek charitable donations from those that wish to help. Hoax travel reimbursements are also prevalent together with emails promising the availability of protective equipment and sanitising products. 

It really is the case that we all need to stop and think before clicking on anything contained within an email. If you have ANY doubt at all – don’t click! 

‘Vishing’ and ‘Smishing’ are also techniques being used by Cybercriminals. Vishing is the use of cold-calling – if you’re concerned that the call is fraudulent – hang up! Text messaging from a ‘trustworthy’ source is known as Smishing and operates in the same way as Phishing – so don’t click on the links!
