Net Primates are committed to providing exceptional cybersecurity alongside IT support to local SMEs and we constantly strive to stay ahead of the evolving threat landscape. As part of this endeavour Steve recently attended the Blunt Security ‘SME Cyber Consultant Training Programme’, a course tailored specifically for cybersecurity professionals advising SMEs. This course was a comprehensive deep dive into both foundational and advanced cybersecurity concepts, and we’d like to share why we attended, what we gained, and how it enhances the services we provide for you.

Why we took this course
Cybersecurity threats grow more sophisticated every day, and SMEs are especially vulnerable, often lacking the same resources as larger enterprises to defend against attacks. We joined this programme because it goes beyond standard cybersecurity training; it’s designed by experienced professionals specifically to equip consultants with the unique skills needed to address SME cybersecurity challenges effectively.
The training covered everything from information security fundamentals to Cyber Essentials requirements, and even explored topics like ethical standards. For us, this training wasn’t just about acquiring knowledge but about transforming it into actions that benefit you in real, measurable ways.
Key areas of learning
- Information security 101 and Cyber Essentials
The training programme’s focus on core principles like the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) reinforced essential concepts that help us ensure data security. It also drilled deep into Cyber Essentials requirements, so we’re prepared to guide you through every step of meeting these minimum security standards, plus additional measures for even stronger protection.
- Ethics, professional standards and Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
Trust is a cornerstone of our role as cybersecurity professionals, especially when working closely with your sensitive information. This training emphasised ethical standards and professional conduct, crucial for building and maintaining trust with clients. We covered best practices for handling sensitive data responsibly, along with legal considerations unique to cybersecurity. Moreover, the course reinforced the importance of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), ensuring that we not only meet but exceed industry standards as threats evolve. This commitment to ongoing learning means that our advice and services remain current, reliable, and in your best interest.
- Consultancy soft skills
Knowledge alone doesn’t make a great consultant; communication and empathy are essential too. We learnt specific techniques for gathering and analysing information, understanding your unique business context, and presenting insights in ways that make cybersecurity accessible for technical and non-technical audiences alike. This focus on soft skills means we’re better equipped to communicate effectively and build stronger, trust-based client relationships.
- Beyond Cyber Essentials
Cyber Essentials is a fantastic starting point, but it doesn’t cover every cybersecurity need. We received an in-depth overview of what lies beyond Cyber Essentials, including frameworks like ISO27001 and NIST, so we can advise you on more advanced, comprehensive protections as your business grows and evolves.
- Report writing and case studies
Documentation is vital in cybersecurity. We refined our report writing skills to help ensure you receive clear, concise, and actionable insights that help you understand your current security position and what steps are needed. Plus, working through real-world case studies strengthened our ability to handle end-to-end consultancy projects with confidence and precision.
- Tools of the trade
A well-equipped cybersecurity toolkit can make all the difference in addressing specific needs effectively. We learnt about the latest tools available, how they apply to different scenarios, and when to use each for maximum security impact.
